Third season for Shanya’na nge White Star

Launched in 2020, popular music showcase “Shanya’na ngeWhite Star” meaning “shine with white star” kept everyone entertained during Covid, is back for a third season.

To add flavour to this year’s campaign, it is kicking off with two live and exclusive musical experiences, the first in Johannesburg on 12 May followed by Durban on 21 May. These live events will be followed by a 13-week series on Metro FM, which will be live streamed on social media and will also give fans the opportunity to win R5000 cash prize per episode.

The Metro FM campaign will again feature 13 of the freshest talent to come out of Mzansi, including the hip and happening Kekelingo, Nomfundo Mo, Zuko SA and many more. And, as in the first two seasons, it will give fans an opportunity to follow their performances on social media.

White Star has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with local artists,” says Mokhele Makhothi, the Marketing Manager of South Africa’s leading maize meal brand.

During the various phases of lockdown, we wanted to extend that support by creating an opportunity for local artists to partake in the campaign and earn income, while also to lightening the mood in the country. The initiative has been so successful that we’ve decided to continue with it, giving new talent a national platform and keeping fellow South Africans entertained and close to the heart of local music.” Makhothi explains.

The first Shay’na nge White Star experience, which kicked off in September 2020, featured a sponsorship of Metro FM’s Sunday Soul Therapy with Msizi Shembe. During the #Shay’na ngeWhite Star hour, the station played only local music and but also gave local musicians an opportunity to re-connect with their fans through live streaming of their performances on social media.

Some of the top-charting hitmakers to benefit from this include the likes of Langa Mavuso, Ami Faku, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Simmi, Encore, Soul Kulture, Ayanda Jiya, Zarcia, Mlindo, Manana, Karabo, Nomcebo, Zoe Modiga and Mpho Sebina.

Now in an extended format, Shay’na nge White Star will continue to boost local artists and provide an exciting and engaging experience for fans. At each musical experience, lucky fans will get to be part of the live audience and to meet their favourite artists – with all Covid-related protocols observed!

As always, musicians and singers will benefit from being featured on the playlists as well as from the streaming and downloads of their music,” says Makhothi. “The idea behind the campaign is that the more South Africans listen to and support local music, the more local content will be played on radio and TV, helping all our favourite artists to emerge from the dry season caused by Covid.”

White Star has been a supporter of the local music industry right from the start. Since 1999, music has been an integral part to White Star’s identity, with the brand being aligned with popular music shows such as Macufe, DrumBeat and the Moretele Park Tribute Concert.

Makhothi explains “With this initiative, we are also appealing to other stations to add more South African content to their playlists and for TV shows to feature videos and live performances by local artists. Music is woven into our culture and every show, every streaming and every download will contribute towards keeping our vibrant and exceptional music industry afloat.”

Makhothi also adds “Shay’na ngeWhite Star was created to bring the beat back into our lives at a very difficult time in our history and we aim to take that momentum forward now. We’re inviting all South Africans to share in the experience, to move to the beat and to shine. Local is lekker. Let’s celebrate that!

The remarkable ‘Yoli’ cementing her prestige

Housemates, are you ready? a familiar call that gorgeous Tik Toker, English Teacher and Thespian, Yolanda Glover better known to us as ‘Yoli’ became accustomed to, in South Africa’s reality show “Big Brother Mzansi“.

Being behind the camera and beguiling your audience with your charming personality is not an easy task, however it is doable but it’s another ball game when you are a contestant of a massive reality show, as we bear witness to your true character unraveling day by day.

Although as a society, we had been entertained by it all, it gave us all a greater understanding of who Yoli is truly about and how she was able to manage the situations that she was in.

Though the reality show has since thus ended, the creative has been able to focus on what truly matters in her life, giving us a glimpse of her world and what elements play a significance in it. Let’s share a moment with the fabulous ‘Yoli’.

What are three (3) lessons you would say you learnt from Big Brother?

Lesson 1: Patience
I’ve always been a rather patient person, but there were several times in the house where my patience was tested, and not having the ability to control things that happen in the environment you’re in, really teaches you a level of patience you never knew you had.

Lesson 2: Conflict Resolution

Every conflict can be resolved with effective communication

Lesson 3: Be present

With so much going on in the big brother house it’s easy to get lost in moments, almost lose yourself, I learned to recoil into myself and be present and aware of my surroundings.

After being on the show, how has it changed your life?

The hardest change I’d say is you lose a sense of privacy when you’re in the public eye, people almost feel entitled to know everything about you and have opinions too.

You and Norman were extremely close on the show, are you still just as close even outside the show?

We’re super close, even more so outside of the house – we’ve been able to grow a lifelong relationship.

Being a thespian, are there any plans for you to go into acting in the near future?

Yes, the theatre arts are a passion of mine, so I’ll definitely be going into that soon.

What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?

I’m a polyglot, which means I have the ability to speak, learn and pick up various languages easily.

For people who are of your stature and need a confidence boost to appreciate their body. What would be your advice to them? Also, where do you get you get your confidence from?

My advice is to spend more time with your body in its rawest form, stare at yourself, you have to shift your mindset to see your flaws as beautiful, society taught us to hate our bodies, if one can teach hate, one can also be taught love, combat self hate , by loving yourself fiercely and unapologetically.

How do I have so much confidence?’ I do a lot of positive affirmations every morning.

For anyone who would like to enter Big Brother in future, what would your advice be to them?

Stay focused, don’t feel pressured to change who you are to suit those around you, make sure you have the right intentions for entering.

What else do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m a Tiktoker , I love the fun and freedom that app provides, I also like being outdoors in nature and reading.

What can we expect from you in future?

Expect the unexpected! There are many different sides and talents to Yoli, and I’m looking forward to you guys discovering it all.

From the lessons and blessings learnt from her journey on “Big Brother“, “expect the unexpected” is a wonderful way to describe how we can all anticipate greatness from Yoli, who we are sure will give what our hearts truly desires from her.

Dlala Thukzin One Man Concert Phenomenon

Lamontville born record label founder, DJ and Producer Thuthuka Zindlovu, popularly known as ‘Dlala Thukzin’, will be having his first “one-man concert” on 01 May 2022 at Berea Rovers near Kings Park Stadium.

Not only will this be his first time to achieve such within his career but this historic moment is quite massive for the city of Durban. This is definitely a treat that many should not miss out on!

As a person who is a firm believer in collaborating with others, he will not be alone as other magnificent artists will be present at the “one man concert”, these include: Babes Wodumo, Mampintsha, Kweyama Brothers, Zaba, DJ Tira, Wobbly, Junior De Rocka, Distruction Boyz, Sithelo, Dladla Mshunqisi, Lvovo and many more fantastic artists who will be apart of this historic event.

While the excitement is definitely in the air for all of this, many cannot forget about the devastating floods that took place across the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. As a result of this, many lives were lost and people have been displaced through losing their homes.

Through the plea to assist those who have lost quite a lot through the KZN flooding, Dlala Thukzin and his team have asked people to donate what they can to help alleviate the situation taking place in the province.

“I am excited for this historic moment as it is quite a big achievement for me within my career. Aside from all of this, I want to help those that have suffered immensely from the KZN flooding, through this event I wish to achieve that!” he explains.

It is only a matter of time till the City of Durban gets to experience the Dlala Thukzin “One Man Concert” and it would be big mistake for one not to be present at this momentous occasion.

Honourable mentions of 2022

Written by: Simphiwe Mtshali

Music over the past two years has been in regular rotation, across all genres, with sounds of quality and potential classics despite the global pandemic of COVID-19.

The art, craftsmanship and unique ability of bringing music to life, is exactly what we got during this pandemic from upcoming, new as well as old artists meaning that 2022 will be the year audiences get to enjoy this elevated experience of new music. However, it would be unjust if there is not a mention of a few names that might take the music space by storm and put it on notice.

Social networks and social media platforms were great tools to share new music, break out new music from upcoming artists, as well as showcase music despite being in a pandemic. With the easing of restrictions small gatherings were starting to pop up such private location parties and roof top parties with artists stepping up to the opportunity, which meant more unknown artists were being showcased, new fusion genres as well as different sounds being introduced.

In essence 2022, there a few names to be on the lookout for and these are few of that deserve a mention.

Zakes Bantwini:

Towards the end of the previous year a new fusion called “Afrotech”, was starting to pick up pace introduced by Zakes Bantwini with “Osama“, a hit off his latest offering “Ghetto King” but the one hit that become an anthem was “iMali“. With many exclusive events, as well as social media visuals blasting this single in through their content it soon become a song flowing through the airwaves despite it being a new release. A collaboration between Karyendasoul and Zakes Bantwini featuring Nana Atta was the introduction of Karyendasoul to the mainstream music market as well as the sound of “Afrotech“.

Karyendasou:

Bonga Ntozini also known as “Karyendasou” is a multi-talented music producer and a DJ from Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape, who has also worked Black coffee. His hit “iMali” has given the house audience someone to look at for who is on the rise and could be offering many more house anthems in the near future.

Bongesizwe Mabandla:

Musical storytelling is an attribute of music that has grown at steady rate because of the difficulty of fusing soulful sound with capturing lyrics which is what Bongesizwe Mabandla brings to the table through his neo-soul sound.

Bongesizwe Mabandla is a singer and a guitarist from Tsolo in the Eastern Cape, who taken his talents from the humble shores of Durban to places like Spain, France, Netherlands and England. With his latest offering “Iimini“, which has a lovely single called “Zange” that’s exposed the neo-soul sound for its true beauty and allowed his audience to enjoy his music through a fusion of capturing lyrics, as well as a clean soulful sound. The pandemic might have interrupted the momentum of his international tour but his wholesome sound echoes through African regions to the seas of Europe. As the neo-soul genre continues to evolve Bongesizwe Mabandla is definitely a pioneer of this genre.

Nomfundo Moh:

The genre of afro-soul was rocked by Nomfundo Moh who gave an instant hit with “Phakade Lami” which dominated the airwaves over the festive season. Nomfundo Ngcobo better known as “Nomfundo Moh” from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, is a songwriter and vocalist within the afro-soul genre. Her collaboration with Ami Faku and Sha Sha given the market a breakout single that has made enough to keep the anticipation for her upcoming album at a peak as well as being keen to explore her catalogue within the Afro-pop genre.

Ntencane:

Maskandi has claimed its place in the mainstream market with social media platforms encouraging the use of this genre of music especially on Tik-Tok and Instagram videos, as well as WhatsApp status videos which has a positive effect on the commercial use of the genre.

Senzo Zondi, also known as “Ntencane”, is from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal furthermore he is a singer, producer and songwriter as well as a social media sensation through his single “Bayangisabawela“. This single has been trending across all social media platforms leading to more exposure to the genre, growth in audience and giving Maskandi a better online presence.

In the year 2022 we can expect many more surprises, a better refined sound across all genres but most importantly, let’s keep an eye out for all these artists mention above and allow them a chance to give an introduction to a new sound.

Behind the mic with General Njiniyela

Aside from the breath taking natural scenic views, the vibrant diverse cultures to exist and overall delicious cuisines located in the heart of Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) – the one thing that you can be guarantee on, that will leave your soul feeling elated is the creative talent.

Sensational Podcaster Musa Langa better known as “General Njiniyela“, host of the eccentric platform – General Njiniyela Podcast Sessions (GNPS) profiles KZN creatives from all walks of life who have had an impact on society, from their work in their own way. Episode by episode, it breaks down the stereotype that many have argued that the province lacks a support structure for creatives to speak and document their journey.

It is no coincidence that many gravitate towards his podcast, the raw and in-depth stories from the plethora of KZN creatives who share their experiences, gives a greater understanding of what it truly means to be a creative from KZN – a badge of honour that many dismiss with great ease.

Mimicking his warm aura and energetic presence that he presents on his platform, all that can be said is:

“Hello and welcome to the world according to General Njiniyela!”

What do you enjoy about your podcast?

I enjoy meeting and getting to know new people, since most of my guests are not popular guest like guests you’d find in most podcasts. So one thing I always guarantee about each episode is that my audience will have first access to get to know someone to get to know someone who’ll potentially be as popular as the guests in other podcasts.

I also enjoy seeing them progress in their career, past them being on the podcast.

Why did you specifically focus on Durban creatives?

Why not focus on Durban?
If you look at the current crop of widely popular artists in the entertainment industry, majority were once based in KZN, specifically Durban – which is why I say the “sauce” resides here in KZN and we deserve to have our own platforms that document and promote these brands.

This will allow artists to reside and flourish countrywide while here in DBN. To back this, I’ll mention a few artists who once resided here and now are considered major brands in the entertainment business, they are: Black Coffee, Pearl Thusi, DJ Zinhle,Nomzamo Mbatha, Zakes Bantwini, Thuso Mbedu and DJ Tira.

In 5 years time, where do you see your podcast going?

In 5 years, I feel we’ll be a household platform in Durban.

What are the challenges that you have faced with regards to the GNPS Podcast eg: Guests not pitching up?

The biggest challenge for me right now is just balancing my 9 to 5, podcasting and running the events business with my wife.

Give us 3 guest interviews that you really thoroughly enjoyed and why?

I’ve enjoyed majority of the episodes I’ve produced to be honest but I do have episodes where we would have technical difficulties during the recording or post production. It’s very painful because it would happen on episodes that I’d consider to be some of my best work.

Since you are a person that interviews quite a lot of Durban creatives, what do you feel that Durban creatives could do to make a good name for themselves i.e: Have media kits on standby and take their crafts seriously.

Consistency! That’s the one thing I feel let’s most of us down. If creatives can find a way to be consistent – no matter what the current results are. If you’re consistent at something, you’re bound to stand out amongst everyone doing that thing.

What could the creative industry do to support Durban Creatives?

If Durban creatives write and work together, the corporate industry will support Durban creatives. If we continue to work silos as we are right now, we’ll continue to to struggle as we are right now.

Your wishlist of guests that you want to interview?

It would be former Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, former South African President Jacob Zuma, former Bafana Bafana Player Lucas Radebe, South African Rugby Captain Siya Kolisi, Media Personality Linda Sibiya, EFF Leader Julius Malema, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and Actress Sindi Dlathu.

What was the reason for the actual Podcast? Also why the name GNPS?

‘GNPS’ stands for “General Njiniyela Podcast Sessions“, the reason for the podcast is simply to give KZN youth a voice and also help launch a KZN Television network that is owned by people that have been born and bred here in KZN.

This way the people of KZN will be able to tell and document their own history. Since we not only cater to artists only but also small business owners, leaders various industries in KZN.

Your advice to those who wish to follow in your footsteps?

It would be to do the necessary and thorough research on what is needed to start. Once you have started, don’t stop, create meaningful relationships with people doing what you are doing.

What else can we expect from you in future?

Consistency, growth, innovation and respect.

Are music reviews still going to be a thing that you will continue with?

Yes, most definitely! Music is constant in my life.

General Ninjinyela is on a mission and all we can do is watch his magic unfold right before our very eyes and give appreciation to those who are playing a significant role in making the KZN creative industry become a greater force to be reckoned with.

It’s essential to give credit to those that deserve it and with each form of creation that General Njiniyela does, we know it will be nothing short of perfection.

Njinga Mpanza: The Icon

If there was a motto which was able to sum up Award Winning KZN Radio and Club DJ, Njinga “The Icon” Mpanza it would be “Achieve, Maintain, Upgrade’’. A motto that he personally lives by and showcases in his line of work, the Gagasi FM Radio and Club DJ, ensures that in all he does, it must be immaculate and leave a great impression to those who are following his footsteps.

Recently, the acting bug has gotten to him where he can be viewed on SABC 1’s “Uzalo” (Home to South Africa’s most viewed television show).

With all this to take in, he also has a platform alongside his partners called “The Network”, one where like minded people come together in a social gathering and mingle . As well as being a father, a role that he takes on with gleaming pride. All that can be said is “Welcome to the ebullient world according to Njinga ‘The Icon’ Mpanza!”

One of your biggest blessings that you emphasize on quite a lot is your daughter, would you say that she is the source of your inspiration in all that you do?

Letlotlo is the source of my joy & light, my beautiful daughter is the reason I am becoming a more positive & responsible person, however, the source of my inspiration is my goal. I want to become one of the most influential people of our time one day, for personal reasons. Whether in SA, Africa or the world. My beautiful daughter does remind me to be great everyday though!

Looking at your journey, you started from Durban Youth Radio (D.Y.R) and currently you are at Gagasi FM, how have you felt about that transition?

It was a paradox at first, as I was extremely ready to join the ‘Big G‘ because I came from an English only station. Gagasi FM is a bilingual station so when I came speaking English only, some listeners kept asking me why do I keep talking in English (laughs). After that feedback from the listeners, I adjusted and it became smoother.

You have faced many hurdles in your career, as a creative what do you do to stay motivated and keep on pushing your craft?

That’s a great question. I ask myself a question, ‘Njinga, how bad do you want this?’ and the answer is always the same, ‘I WANT IT BAD – So let’s get it!’ That’s my motivation when the going gets tough. You have to always remember why you’re here and what you are doing.

Now let’s unpack your radio interviews, what has been the most challenging interview you have had to do and how did you overcome it?

I’d say most ‘big’ artists are really hard to do because you have to go through a few people before actually getting the chance to request an interview. I’d say Sho Madjozi was the most challenging because I had to speak to about 5 or 6 people just to get to her manager.

Be honest, have you ever been star struck from any of the guests you have had on your show? Who was it?

(Laughs) All the time! I’m a big fan of music and because of the type of show I host, the Urban Top 30, I get to conversate with artists whose music I genuinely like. I’d say chatting with Black Coffee & Zakes Bantwini were personal highlights for me purely because of how their music impacted me when I was growing up. However, I ALWAYS get starstruck, it’s embarrassing actually.

What in your view is the greatest accomplishment that you have had this far in your career?

That’s another great question. I’d say it’s starting. Plenty of people don’t know this but I took a MASSIVE leap of faith back in 2015. I quit my job and decided to take on entertainment wholeheartedly. It was one of the dumbest and BEST decisions I could have ever made. To answer your question, monetizing my dream is my biggest accomplishment, everything else is a huge bonus.

There is always a big concern when it comes to radio that it is a dying form of media due to new forms of media coming up i.e: Podcasts, what is your view of this statement?

I don’t think radio will ever die. Radio is live, interactive & current. A radio host can talk about something as its happening while listeners call in to add to the dialogue, NOW! All happening now in real time. No edits or do overs. Once you say something on air, you can’t edit it out. Podcasts are GREAT but by the time you’re done recording, editing & uploading your podcast, it’s already old news.

Think of it like a newspaper, but visual. To answer your question podcasts are here to stay, but so is radio.

You have an event called “The Network” please unpack on this fantastic platform and how has it worked out for you?

The concept of ‘The Network’ keeps evolving. As surface level, the Executive Partners on board and I host events. On a deeper level, we are a marketing & media organisation however, sticking to the surface level, we host concept events for creatives & young professionals.

We’ve hosted 3 events so far at Origin & we will be hosting more at different locations to deliver a variety of social experiences. A big s/O to our DJs:

– African November
– Cannon Le Rod
– Zeedah
– DJ Flair
– DJ Musique
– Sphe Live

What else can we expect from you in the future?

(Laughs) I really don’t know. Only God above can truly answer this question. I am an artist so expect art from me. I’m never in control of where my passion leads me but it will always be something that has to do with entertaining people. That’s what I love to do, to entertain.

What is your advice to those who wish to follow in your footstep?

Money must not be the result of your goal, money must be the consequence of your goal!”

There is nothing more inspiring than watching the underdog achieve their dream bit by bit, which makes the hopes of many people who share the same aspirations believe that their dreams are achievable. Njinga” The Icon” Mpanza is proof of this and at the pace he is going at, we can only imagine what other glass ceiling he will break in the future.
